What is SEO?
SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, ‘is the process of affecting the online visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine's unpaid results.’ SOURCE
It is a strategy that is implemented and incorporated into your website design to maximise the traffic or number of visitors from the ‘free’, ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ results that are presented by Google, Bing, Yahoo etc.
It is THE most effective form of online marketing or internet marketing
You may be asking ...
“Why is it so important?”
It's not just important, it's a vital element that has the ability to put your website on the first page of Google, Bing, Yahoo and other engines.
The quality and depth of your campaign affects what rank or position your website achieves for specific keywords.
The more visible your website is in Google, Bing, Yahoo, i.e. the closer it is to page one, the first page, and the higher the position, or rank, the more visitors you are likely to receive to your website.
Of course the more visitors you get to your website, the more sales you are likely to make.
You may be thinking:
“I’ve heard about Pay-Per-Click, Sponsored Ads and Adwords. What about doing that instead?”
A lot of people consider going this route so let’s help you better understand the difference between pay-per-click and Organic SEO…
What is PPC?
PPC, or pay-per-click to use the full term, is a model of internet advertising whereby advertisers pay a fee for each time their advert is clicked by a user.
In essence, it’s a method of buying visits to your website rather than trying to genuinly ‘earn’ visits through organic, natural methods.
With PPC, advertisers bid for their advert placement based on a number of factors including the popularity and saturation of the keywords or service / product being advertised.
PPC can be very complicated to implement and can turn out to be very expensive in a short space of time.
The fact is that the majority of internet users ignore ‘sponsored’ or PPC ads.
A recent survey conducted by Google showed that 85% of people claim to ignore sponsored ads.
I know I don’t waste my time clicking the pay-per-click ads.
Ask yourself the same question: 'Do I click on these sponsored ads?'
Chances are you don’t!
What is the difference between Organic Search Engine Optimisation versus Pay-Per-Click
A study conducted last year showed the following:
‘On the first page alone, the first five organic results account for 67.60% of all the clicks and the results from 6 to 10 account for only 3.73%.’
If you‘re like most searchers, you would rather click on an organic result versus a paid ad.
As demonstrated by the data above, simply paying for Google Ads is not enough.
There have been many studies proving that to benefit from maximum traffic and organic clicks your website needs to have a prominent organic position or rank in the search engine results, namely on the first page, page 1.
Studies indicate that ‘71.33% of searches resulted in a page 1 Google organic click. Page two and three only get 5.59% of clicks. On the first page alone, the first five results account for 67.60% of all the clicks and the results from 6 to 10 account for only 3.73%.’
So what does that leave?
A pretty poor 15% of all traffic that ends up going to Google Paid Ads (PPC / Adwords).
That’s staggering.
If you think you’re going to get the best value for money and results from a Google Adwords campaign you need to think again!
While your high-cost ads may give you some instant gratification, in the long run there’s zero long term investment, a minimal CTR (click through rate) per Rand spent, and little boosting of your brand’s credibility.
Organic SEO is simply the hands-down winner… by a long shot!
Why so much focus on Google versus other Bing, Yahoo and others?
Google has by far the biggest market share..
Here is the data:
- Google 78.76%
- Baidu 11.18%
- Bing 5.33%
- Yahoo! 3.34%
- Yandex 0.71%
- ... etc
So it definitely makes sense to prioritise Google when it comes to your internet marketing strategy but with Yahoo and Bing making up nearly 9%, it’s also worth including and targeting them.
If you’re wondering what ‘Baidu’ is, it’s the Chinese equivalent of Google and its very popular in China.
Your Website Is Your Shop Front
Your business website is, in effect, your sales counter and shop front.
Think of the lengths shopkeepers, store owners and shop brands go to in creating attractive window displays so as to grab the attention of their customers as they pass by.
If the passerby happens to stop to look at the window display, they are more likely to enter the shop and buy something.
This analogy works perfectly for website and in a similar way you need a developer that can create pages that are visually appealing and contain well written content and relevant high resolution imagery.
If you have an existing site and you're not sure about the quality, we offer a Free Audit that will advise you accordingly.

What about alternative methods of advertising?
Forget about print advertising, the Yellow Pages, local & national newspapers & magazines, knocking on doors, etc. Those methods are costly, ineffective, very difficult to measure and now antiquated.
If you look at the graph here created by US tech and media consultant Alan Mutter, he highlights the rise of Google and the collapse of USA newspaper advertising.
‘Pre-digital advertising relied on reaching as many people as possible, while not being as concerned with targeting specific audiences or consumers.
To the extent that it was possible to reach specific consumers, it was done with special sections in newspapers or magazine content.
Digital advertising allows much greater targeting, and Google’s commercial breakthrough was to deliver ads based on what people are searching for.
The logic goes that if someone is looking for a holiday flight then they might also be looking for a hotel or rental car.
Print media were woefully late in grasping this key difference in advertising strategies.
‘In less than a dozen years, this upstart start-up (Google) built a $46 billion advertising business that was twice as large last year as the combined print and digital ad sales of all of the 1,382 daily newspapers in the land.’
While Mutter is discussing the US market, the changes in digital advertising are universal and relevant to any market.
In fact, in some markets in the early stages of the digital transition, his insights are in some ways even more relevant and could help new businesses avoid the strategic blunders made by the USA newspaper industry'. SOURCE
As you will no doubt know, when we need something; a service or product, we tend to grab our smartphone, tablet or laptop and search Google for a service provider or product supplier.
According to research 90% of consumers, worldwide, do this... we all ‘Google it’!
Therefore, logically, the most effective, results delivering method of advertising is through Google.

Do I need these services from a professional agency?
If you want to hit the target, the short answer is yes.
Basically, to expand your online business and dominate your market you will need to hire a proves, experienced professional agency or individual... or start to dedicate many hundred's of hours to learning and doing it in-house.
The sooner you get around to doing this the better.
The competition online is getting strong now making it foolish to delay acting while your competitors work on increasing their website traffic.
Every kind of online business and organisation can benefit from SEO.
While the most opportune time to improve your campaign is when you decide you need a website redesign, or when you are planning to launch a new site, we can also help improve traffic to an existing site and so contribute to improved sales.
How long does it take towork? How long before I start appearing in the the 1st page of Google?
This method is an ongoing marketing strategy which requires, among many other things, optimising and creating carefully researched and crafted web content on the page, axquiring backlinks from other websites, optimising 3rd party channels, etc, etc.
The time it takes to see measurable results depends on your market and the competitiveness of your keywords.
For example, a car sales website will find it much harder to top the search results than a bouncy castle rental service.
The fact is that many more people search ‘cars for sale’ than ‘bouncy castles for rent’ and there are thousands of car sales websites with identical keywords.
Some keywords are just easier than others to push up the search results rankings than others!
Consider SEO as a long term investment.
You need to earn those top positions in Google and there are no shortcuts.
With a sound strategy and a solid implementation plan you should see considerable improvements in your ratings within 6 to 12 months (depending on the competition).
